What is best, Fake Flowers, Real flowers or Dried flowers?

Updated: Dec 19, 2021

Flowers are definitely a big part of the wedding venue’s decor and you should plan a large amount of your budget towards it. The wedding planner, whether it’s the bride herself, a professional or both, often spends a lot of time selecting the floral types to create arrangements that match the rest of the decor. These arrangements must be perfectly match to the theme and carefully selected to add a touch of natural beauty to the setting.

Until now, most wedding planners choose to go with natural flowers. I know that as a professional planner, I do prefer them. After all, natural flowers do look beautiful and also smell soooo good. Fake wedding flowers for wedding decor have been around for as long as I can remember and I’m sure way before that. As a child, I clearly remember seeing them at my aunties weddings. They looked fake and definitely didn’t smell like roses, but are they still not a great choice for your weddings? And what about dried flower, where do they fit in this ordeal??

If you want to cut down on your floral budget, fake wedding flowers are probably an ideal

option. Both real flowers and dried flowers can be really expensive depending on your colour palette and the type of flowers you fancy. They all have their own pros and cons and this subject is definitely one among wedding planners.

The obvious question that comes to mind when choosing between real, dried and fake wedding flowers is why you should even consider getting fake flowers. This question becomes even more relevant if you are not particularly keen on cutting down the budget.

Once you give this topic some thought, you will find that just considering fake flowers will open up a world of choices in this segment for you. In fact, if you choose to, you can even use a combination of fake, died and real flowers for your wedding.

Real flowers are really expensive. If you speak to anyone who recently got marrie, ask them about their floral arrangements and see for yourself that just for the bridal party corsages, boutonnieres and bouquets, we are already at around $1000 for real flowers. This is if them went conservative with their choices. On average, a couple will spend from $2000 to $3500 on just flowers for their big event.

There is no doubt that real flowers are much more expensive than fake wedding flowers. Dried and preserved are also pretty high on the cost chart, since they are real and treated to keep their shape and bright in colour. Fake wedding flowers will cost less than half of what real flowers do and will still look really nice if the arrangements are well created.

As you may or may not know, my team and I are always on the hunt for the nicest products to ease your wedding planning. We have a beautiful silk flower selection. We work with a local supplier, to offer you the best products. We only have a small selection of what they actually carry, but if you can't find what you want in our store, give us a shout-out. Let us know exactly what you are looking and I'm sure we can find something just like or really close to your needs.

You can see our current select right here in FLOWERS & things.

Like we mentioned before, there are numerous options in fake wedding flower designs and colours. You can get some truly natural-looking flowers and that too at a very reasonable price. Whether you want flowers for centrepieces or for your bridal bouquet, our florist Natasha will be able to provide natural looking silk flowers which some may find to be even better than real flowers. Especially when it comes to the colour choices.

You can even rent fake wedding flowers from us! We do have a few fake floral arrangements that can be shipped to you directly or one of our team members can do the installation for you. This can be a real game-changer for your budget and which is not possible with real wedding flowers.

After the wedding, all you need to do is ship the bouquet back to us. All this can be made possible by paying a very nominal rental fee which is far lesser than what you would pay for a bouquet made from real flowers. If the arrangement we have is not to your liking, we can always discuss the possibility of creating something new to your taste. Obviously, it will need to be rentable afterwards and thus following the latest trends. We're always ready to discuss new projects.

If you're scared that your guests will be able to tell the flowers are fake, the answer is easy, they probably won't. Real flowers do look more natural but the silk flowers will also look so real that guests would probably not be able to tell the difference unless they actually go about touching and smelling all the flowers. Even if they recognize that the flowers are fake, they probably won’t care as their major focus would be on the food and music.

However, if you feel that it's important to have real flowers, you can always have a mix of real, dried and fake. Use the real and dried to make the floral your guests will be able to see up close and the fake for the florals that are fare from eyes and fingers. For example, an arch or an suspended arrangement are fare from reach and use a lot of flowers to make a good effect. It would be a good saving to use fake, because no one will be able to touch them. If you are thinking of using floral decorations including flowers and other greenery as the main decoration for the wedding venue, it would actually be more advisable to go with the fake flowers. Not only do these flowers and greenery look quite real, but you can also install them without worrying about them dying.

One other advantage to use fake flowers is that you can keep your wedding flowers for sentimental reasons and to decorate your home. You could also offer them to your guests or resale them on social media.

The worst part about getting real wedding flowers is that they all just go to waste. You could offer them to your guests, but the will most likely die shortly after. When it comes to the dried and preserved, well those are great for gifting or to keep for yourself. If cared for, they will keep forever.

There are other options other than silk or dried flowers to choose from if you want to keep your bouquet for keepsake. For brides who want to be unconventional in their choice, you can go for flowers made from tissue or crepe paper for an even more unique look, which is sure to be appreciated by all your guests. Here is an example of a bouquet with crepe and tissue paper flowers. There are still expensive because we are making them one by one by hand, but the look is incredible. Larence and I love creating these, they are such a show stopper. The selection of paper flowers is also in the FLOWERS & Things section of our website.

Fake wedding flowers are more durable than any other types of flowers. It will take much more than a gust of wind or some light rain to cause any significant damage to fake wedding flowers which are by design much more sturdy and durable. If you are planning to have an outdoor wedding, you should definitely consider getting fake flowers, so that you don’t have to worry about the decoration getting spoilt if the wedding day turns out to be cloudy or rainy.

Another key reason why real flowers are a little harder to work with is that each species grows in a certain season. Forget about getting tulips in the fall, that would be really hard and seriously expensive. With fake, dried or paper flowers, you don’t have to worry if the floral you have your heart set on is “in season” or not! They are always available; unless there is a production shortage.

My favourite reason and a great reason to get fake wedding flowers is that you can choose to get the flowers designed in any color you want. You can have purple roses or red hydrangeas. Not only will that look unique and exotic but you can actually color match our custom bridesmaid dresses with the color of the flowers too. Yes, yes you read it, we create custom dresses to match any theme you can throw at us.
